Volunteers

Since beginning my major in Public Management, I have been eager to volunteer for a Christian non-profit. It was God’s grace that He heard my prayer and helped me get to know the L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry through Jen (who goes to my same church). I have been working for the last month as a grant researcher and a volunteer at the women’s book study group at Miryam’s and I love them both! I find myself filled with so much passion to serve our Lord in the work that I do with the ministry. When I visit the women at the shelter, I learn so much from God’s word that helps strengthen and build my faith. I wish that I could begin my future career with the ministry and serve God here after my graduation.

When I was a freshman in college, I was challenged to do more with my faith than I was accustomed to. Once such step of faith was to wake up early and do the labor halls. I didn’t grow up in a place with a lot of homeless people, so serving on Thursday mornings was a great learning experience for me. One way in which my eyes were open was seeing all that the homeless have to do to provide for themselves. Common stereotypes say that the homeless are lazy, but many that I have encountered are hard workers and very knowledgeable (and are very good at chess and strategic card games). God showed me through my service with L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry that while many people are helped through our faithful service, it is often the other way around, where the homeless reach out and help us understand God’s grace and love better. My challenge to you all would be to step up and volunteer like I did and experience the amazing things God will do in and through you

I fully support what LIVING Ministry is about and works towards. Being involved with the ministry provides me a tangible and accessible way to serve Pittsburgh’s homeless population. God has shown me that we are all impoverished in our need of Him. It’s amazing that He can speak to me and help me realize this fact through interaction with the poor. I love the chance to see Jesus in the faces of his children at the Labor Halls and homeless shelters. I think God wants to transform my own life into a vessel of His light by using my creativity to spread God’s love to people. Serving with the LIVING Ministry has been instrumental in my understanding of God’s purpose for my life, and I look forward to more opportunities to serve and love others.

Serving with L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry is a great way to connect God’s love to people who have a lot to overcome in life. We are so thankful for this awesome opportunity to be reminded of our own brokenness and need for God, not just physically, but spiritually as well. These men have had it rough, rougher than us, but are no less loved by God. We often fail to realize our need because we are better at hiding our brokenness. The men we serve, with their humility and gratitude, show us Christ. These are the people God loves and calls us to love. We are called to share our gifts and talents. Those who are given much, have the ability and responsibility to give much. We praise God for this chance to not just serve the public, but serve our brothers and sisters in Christ also.
