Volunteer

One way to play your part in this ministry is to volunteer. Volunteering is so great because it comes in so many different shapes and sizes. You can volunteer for a single event, or commit to volunteer for ongoing events. For a list of volunteer opportunities in the coming months check out the list at the bottom of this page!
|
When we first started the ministry, our biggest need for volunteers was with our weekly shelter outreach. Since then we have expanded and take volunteers in just about any capacity. We have people volunteer by themselves, or in small or large groups. Our largest single group was about 50 people, but our most volunteers for a single event was over 225!
|
We also are extremely flexible in providing opportunities. This past summer, we had a group of 25 high school students come and serve with us for an entire week. We have hosted week long mission teams from churches outside of Pittsburgh. We have also had church groups do shorter term service projects with us like cooking meals in the shelters, putting bags of toiletries together for men in the shelters, or helping play worship for our Sunday worship service. Either way, there are a myriad of opportunities. If we don’t specifically do a certain thing, we would be more then glad to refer you to an organization that does.

Weekly Opportunities

Shelter Visits
We are always looking for people to visit shelters with us. We spend time getting to know the folks there and lead a Bible study for anybody who is interested to attend. Whether you are outgoing, compassionate, enjoy diving into the Word, or all three, this is a great opportunity to get involved.
Labor Hall Outreach
Another great program that we have currently going on is our Labor Hall Outreach. Every Thursday morning at 5:00 AM, we meet at the Bellefield Presbyterian Church (4001 Fifth Avenue in Oakland) and cook a hearty breakfast for the men and women of Labor Ready. After cooking the breakfast, we take it down to Labor Ready and serve. We usually arrive back in Oakland by 7:30 AM. While this is a weekly service opportunity we use a volunteer rotation which means most people serve about once every four weeks.

Date TBA: Newsletter Assembly

The LIVING Ministry sends out a quarterly newsletter to all of our supporters, both financially and in prayer, to keep everyone aware of all that their support enables us to do. We send this letter to about 850 people and each copy needs to be put in order, stuffed, labeled, and stamped. With about 10 volunteers we can accomplish this job in just about an hour and since the job isn’t too tasking it’s a great time to get to know the other people volunteering with the LIVING Ministry! Saturday, November 13th: ALIVE Clothing Sorting

|
In preparation for the biggest volunteer opportunity of the year (ALIVE – the LIVING Ministry’s annual clothing drive), we need to sort the multiple bags and boxes of clothing that are donated to the ministry. We receive all types of donations – clothing, shoes, coats, gloves, etc. in all sizes for men, women, and children. Organizing this mass of clothing is vital to the success of the clothing drive the following week and without your help we could never get all of it done; anyone and everyone is welcome! Specifics, including time and location, are coming soon!
|

Saturday, November 20th: ALIVE 2010

|
Arguably the LIVING Ministry’s largest outreach event of the year, ALIVE is our annual clothing drive. Not only do we provide clothing for the homeless and needy of Pittsburgh, but lunch, games, crafts, prayer, and most importantly the hope of life in Christ.
|
At ALIVE volunteers are needed in all areas of service. We are looking for people to help folks move through the clothing line, prepare lunch, play games with attendees, run trivia, do arts and crafts, help provide informational resources to those who need them, pray with the men and women who come, and more! Every volunteer has a niche at ALIVE and we would love to help you find yours so that you can use your gifts and talents to directly impact the lives of fellow Pittsburghers!
