Volunteer Opportunities

One way to play your part in this ministry is to volunteer. Volunteering is so great because it comes in so many different shapes and sizes. You can volunteer for a single event, or commit to volunteer for ongoing events. For a list of volunteer opportunities in the coming months check out the list at the bottom of this page!

When we first started the ministry, our biggest need for volunteers was with our weekly shelter outreach. Since then we have expanded and take volunteers in just about any capacity. We have people volunteer by themselves, or in small or large groups. Our largest single group was about 50 people, but our most volunteers for a single event was over 225!
|
We also are extremely flexible in providing opportunities. This past summer, we had a group of 25 high school students come and serve with us for an entire week. We have also had church groups do shorter term service projects with us like cooking meals in the shelters, putting bags of toiletries together for men in the shelters, or helping play worship for our Sunday worship service. Either way, there are a myriad of opportunities. If we don’t specifically do a certain thing, we would be more then glad to refer you to an organization that does.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Some volunteer opportunities at LIVING Ministry repeat regularly – either every week or every month. If you are looking for a way to make a regular commitment to volunteering with LIVING Ministry, these are for you! For more information on an opportunity that interests you contact Jenna Burdette at volunteer AT livingministry DOT org. Also, be sure to take a look at our upcoming events, there are exciting things happening here all the time!

Shelter Visits

We are always looking for people to visit shelters with us. We spend time getting to know the folks there and lead a Bible study for anybody who is interested to attend. Whether you are outgoing, compassionate, enjoy diving into the Word, or all three, this is a great way to get involved! Take a look at our schedule below to find a time that works best for you!

Monday: Safe Haven located in the East End from 3:30 – 5:00 PM. Bible study and fellowship.
Monday (every other): Womenspace East where from 6:00- 7:00 PM we have Bible study and provide child care for children also in the shelter. Open to women only.

Tuesday: Trivia with the men waiting in line for a meal at Light of Life, this goes from 4:00 to about 5:30 PM.
Tuesday: Pleasant Valley in the North Side from 6:45 – 9:00 PM for cards, Bible study, and dinner. This is an opportunity for men only.

Wednesday: Light of Life to hold a Bible study, chapel service, and breakfast from 7:30 – 9:30 AM, this is a men’s only opportunity.
Wednesday: Miryam’s in uptown where we hold a book club from 2:30 – 4:00 PM. Miryam’s is a volunteer opportunity for women only.

Thursday: Wellspring drop in center downtown where we have a spirituality class beginning at 3:00 and ending at 5:00.

Saturday: Pleasant Valley on the North Side from 6:45 – 9:15 PM for Bible study, cards, and dinner just like Tuesday. For male volunteers only.

Sunday: Chapel service at Pleasant Valley from 8:00 – 9:00 AM.

Labor Hall Outreach

Every Thursday morning at 5:00 AM, we meet at the Bellefield Presbyterian Church (4001 Fifth Avenue in Oakland) and cook hearty sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches for the men and women of Labor Ready. After cooking the breakfast, we take it to Labor Ready in Wilkinsburg and the Northside and serve. We usually arrive back in Oakland by 7:30 AM. While this is a weekly service opportunity we use a volunteer rotation which means most people serve about once every four to six weeks.

Thank You Receipts

Every month we send a letter to our donors thanking them for their support and including a receipt for tax purposes. These letters require some assembly; typically we look for one or two volunteers who can meet us at the L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry office (2536 Maple Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15214) for an hour or two to help put together this mailing. The dates for the letter assembly in 2011 are listed below.

Tuesday May 10th
Tuesday June 7th
Tuesday July 5th
Tuesday August 9th
Tuesday September 6th
Tuesday October 4th
Tuesday November 8th
