Fall is a busy time at L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry, have no doubts about that. The past three months saw three major mailings, a work day, the clothing sorting, ALIVE, and a job fair! With all this on top of our regular volunteer events like labor halls and shelter visits it’s hard to imagine what it means to sit still. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made the last three months not only possible – but a real success!

About two months ago Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sent a flyer to the office addressed to the volunteer coordinator. The paper was accepting nominations for the Jefferson Award: an award given to volunteers that display heroism in their service. Past national winners of the Jefferson award include Colin Powell, Sandra Day O’Connor, Oprah Winfrey, Peyton Manning, Jimmy Carter and many other household names.
After a short discussion it became clear that we had a Jefferson Award quality volunteer in our midst: Weiting Zhang. Weiting is a former intern of the …

August was the month of unsung heroes here at LIVING Ministry! Many times the work our volunteers do involves a big project: demolition on a house, making breakfast at 5:00 in the morning, spending a few hours at a shelter. Without volunteers helping to do these jobs, we simply couldn’t do what we do here. But this past month we needed a whole different breed of volunteer: someone who would come in and quietly do some organizing, make some phone calls, and type resumes up. These …

In September, we will be having our annual car wash fundraiser to help raise the necessary funds to continue to serve the homeless here in Pittsburgh. We’ll be at the Busy Beaver in West Mifflin and the Busy Beaver in Crafton washing cars all day on Saturday, September 11th. Our plan is to run the event as a carwash-a-thon where people sponsor a certain amount for every car that we washed.
We’re trying to get to $80 per car committed before the carwash on September 11th. For that to happen, we …

For the last 3 years, the L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry been hosts of a revolutionary job fair. This job fair is unlike any other job fair around. Instead of just setting up tables and having people show up and meet employers, we hold a ‘closed’ job fair, where all of our prospective employees receive job training skills (budgeting, resume writing, conflict resolution, and interviewing skills). These skills help prepare them so that they are a step ahead of other jobseekers when they speak with employers. This always makes a better transition and …
